The fingerprints of God

A fingerprint is an impression on a surface of the curves formed by the ridges on a fingertip, especially such an impression made in ink and used as a means of identification. (answers.com)

Here are some basic facts about fingerprints:

* The patterns of ridges on our finger pads are unique: no two individuals—even identical twins—have fingerprints that are exactly alike.
* We leave impressions—or prints—of these patterns on everything we touch with any pressure.
* The prints can be visible, as when our fingers are dirty or oily, or they can be latent, as when they are made only by the sweat that is always present on our finger ridges.
* Injuries such as burns or scrapes will not change the ridge structure: when new skin grows in, the same pattern will come back.

Dactyloscopy is the practice of using fingerprints to identify someone. People are often convicted because their fingerprints have been left on a crime scene.

Exodus 8 provides a scene of miraculous proportion. It is not a crime scene, but the fingerprints of God are all over it. God sends Moses to tell Pharaoh to let his people go. Pharaoh again refuses, so God sends more plagues. God sends the plague of frogs. The magicians were able to duplicate this plague, but only God could remove it. Then God sent the plague of gnats. The magicians couldn't duplicate this plague. They said, "this is the finger of God".

Though the magicians recognize this as something only God can do, Pharaoh refused to accept it as so. Chapter 8 finally shows God sending the plague of flies. This time He makes a distinction between the people. The Israelites who live in Goshen were not affected by the plague. God directed the flies so that they avoided Goshen and only swarmed over Egypt. This miracle occurred so that the Egyptians would know that God was in the land (v. 22). Exodus 8 has God's fingerprints all over it. There is enough evidence to convict God of "covenant intervention". Because of His commitment to Israel, he chooses to intervene on their behalf.

Take some time today and review the various scenes of your life. Investigate to see if you notice instances or situations where you have to acknowledge as the magicians did, "this is the finger of God". Celebrate His fingerprints for they are evidence of a God who loves you so much that He chooses to intervene.
